About Lichess Study Trainer (LST)

LST is a focused training companion for chess players who use Lichess studies and want a better way to organize, revisit, and actively practice them.

Many players collect dozens (or even hundreds) of studies on lichess.org - openings, endgames, tactics, model games - but over time these valuable resources become hard to track and even harder to practice consistently.

LST bridges that gap by turning your existing studies into a structured, measurable training system.

What you can do on LST

Organize your studies with Tags

Create, review, update, and delete Tags (study categories) that reflect how you think about chess - openings, motifs, positions, endgames, plans, or any system that fits your training style. Each Tag can contain many studies and a study belongs to one Tag.

This keeps your learning material clean, intentional, and easy to revisit.

Manage your chess studies

Each study on LST is linked directly to its original source on lichess.org and stored with essential training data:

  • Tag – the category the study belongs to
  • Lichess URL – the original study link
  • PGN (Portable Game Notation) – the chess content itself

You can create, review, update, or delete studies at any time while keeping lichess as the single source of truth for study creation.

Train by exercising studies (core feature)

The heart of LST is active recall.

Instead of browsing studies passively, you can:

  • Exercise a random study from a selected Tag
  • Exercise a random study from a random Tag from selected list of multiple Tags
  • Exercise a random study from all Tags - for mixed training sessions

This randomness helps prevent memorization-by-order and encourages genuine understanding and long-term retention.

Track your progress automatically

Every time you exercise a study, LST keeps track of your results:

  • How many times a study was exercised
  • How many times it was solved successfully

Over time, this builds a clear picture of your strengths, weaknesses, and learning progress.
